Redbird Gymnasts to Host Conference Championship

Eager to be in Redbird Country for their final meet of the season, the Illinois State womens gymnastics team will host the 2004 Midwest Independent Championship, Saturday, March 20. Scheduled to start at 4 p.m., the meet will be held at Redbird Arena. Redbird head coach Kristin Montero is excited about the opportunity to host the championship. The team is thrilled to have this meet at home, Montero said. I think the energy and comfort of being at Redbird Arena is really going to benefit us on Saturday. The meet will feature the five teams in the Midwest Independent Conference, which include host team, Illinois State, as well as Centenary College, Illinois-Chicago, Southeast Missouri State, and Texas Womens University. Montero looks forward to the top-notch competition that the conference teams will provide. This is going to be a exciting competition, said Montero. It could be anybody's day, any one of these talented teams could walk away with the hardware. But I feel that the experience we have gained throughout the season, and our passion and determination will fuel great gymnastics for Illinois State. The Bird are 1-5 in conference competition on the season. Their lone league win came at the Corvette Cup in Colombia, Mo., on March 6. The Redbirds defeated the Ladies of Centenary College, 191.750-191.400. Illinois State fell to SEMO in previous meetings, both on February 11 and February 29. Fellow conference foe, the Flames of UIC have defeated the Redbirds in three competitions thus far, with one of those losses came just this week, in Wednesdays dual meet in Chicago. Illinois-Chicago outscored the Birds 196.050-192.600. -- 30 --
