Guillermo Gomez looked almost unbeatable Saturday, as he picked up wins in both the singles and doubles competition, and helped the Illinois State mens tennis team (5-5, 1-0) roll over Vincennes, 5-1, at the Evergreen Racquetclub, in Bloomington, Ill.
Gomez teamed with Djordje Uskokovic in the No. 1 doubles spot to defeat Dmytro Hryhohash and Ronald Wirz, 8-2. Gomez then went on to beat Jeremy Doualot in the No. 3 singles position, 6-2, 6-0. The singles win improved Gomezs singles record to 12-6, best on the team.
Fellow Redbird Tim Link was equally impressive in his win in the No. 5 spot over Rastislav Relic, 6-3, 6-1. Alban Renard also picked up a win in the No. 4 spot with a victory over Matt Kennedy, 6-2, 6-3. Yohann Nograbat rounded out the singles wins for the Birds by taking the No. 2 point from Wirz, 6-1, 6-2.
The Birds were able to beat Vincennes despite the fact that three players that are normally in the singles rotation are out due to injury.
Head coach Greg Kennett was pleased with the way his team performed, especially in light of the injury situation.
Were a bit banged up right now, Kenett said, but we are playing through it and are getting some good performances out of our guys.
The Redbirds return to action March 27 against St. Louis, in St. Louis Mo.
