Maskel Leads Birds in Second Round Turnaround

With Matt Maskel leading the way, Illinois State mens golf team was able to overcome a slow start and shoot a low afternoon score placing them in fourth, just four strokes away from second place after day one at the Diablo Grande Intercollegiate. We knew if we wanted to get in this we were going to have to make some changes for the afternoon round, head coach Harland Kilborn said. The guys dug deep and made it happen. The Birds were able to score a 296 just after shooting a 309 in the morning. Maskel (79-72) lead the turnaround by firing a 72, the lowest score for the Birds. Matts 72 was key to the afternoon round, Kilborn said. He helped get everyone going. Three other Birds were able to lower their scores, Denny Bull (79-74), Kris Wildenradt (77-74), and Kyle Vasel (82-74) while Brian Anderson (74-79) posted his low score in the morning. Currently leading the tournament is host Drake (299-297). Play will conclude March 27 with a single shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m.
