Freshman Hilary Anderson shot an even-par 72 to lead the Illinois State womens golf team to a fourth place finish after round one of the Saluki Invitational in Carbondale, Ill. The Redbirds shot a 324 and sit 14 strokes behind tournament leader Michigan (310).
Andersons 72 was the best score of the day and places her first overall individually She was also one of three golfers to have a score in the all-time top ten first round scores of the tournament. Junior Ashlee Johnson, who is competing as an individual, also scored marks in the all-time top ten and is in third place individually.
Following Anderson in Illinois State team scoring were Ashlie Rose (83), Albiona Zhubi (84), Katie Laehn (85), and Chelsea Bach (89).
Wind blowing across Hickory Ridge golf course proved to be a factor Sunday for many of the teams participating in the 10th annual event. However, the Redbirds are still in position to make a run at the leaders on Monday.
Following field leader Michigan are Southern Illinois (317) and Northern Iowa (320). The Birds hold the fourth spot followed by Murray State (330), Southwest Missouri State (330), Arkansas State (334), Wichita State (335), Western Illinois (335), and Bradley (339) to round out the top ten.
The second and final round of the Saluki Invitational begins on Monday with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
