The Illinois State womens tennis team continue to be undefeated in the Missouri Valley Conference as it blanked Creighton on Easter Sunday, 7-0.
In doubles play, the No. 1 duo of Liina Suurvarik and Katri Miller shut out Megan Kowal and Christy Roth, 8-1. Elizabeth Bingier and Emilie Sechaud defeated Creightons Katie Chiu and Pam Gerik, 8-4, at the No. 2 doubles spot, and guaranteed ISU the doubles point.
In singles play, the Redbirds remained strong as they did not allow Creighton to win a single match. No. 1 singles player, Suurvarik, who was the only Bird to go into a tie breaker, battled back to defeat Chiu, 1-6, 6-3, 10-4. At the No 2 position, Miller downed Roth, 6-0, 6-2. No. 4 singles player, Laura Gravino pushed her winning streak to 12 when she defeated Creightons Gerik, 6-0, 6-4. Ashley Maxwell defeated Shannon Whelan, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 6 spot and improved her spring record to 10-1.
Head coach Chris Hoover is pleased with his teams current record of 7-0 in the MVC.
Right now we are 13-3 for the season and I am happy with that, Hoover said. I think we are building momentum and I am looking forward to wrapping up the regular season next weekend.
ISU will play at home against Wichita State on Friday, April 16 at 3:30 p.m. They will then face Southwest Missouri State on Saturday, April 17 at 1 p.m. Both matches will be held at the McCormick Courts.
