Due to inclement weather in Jonesboro, Ark., the Illinois State mens golf team only played one round of golf in the Arkansas State University Indian Classic. The Redbirds sit tied for 15th after shooting a 302 on Monday.
Head coach Harland Kilborn blamed the weather and the Birds putting as factors for the high score.
We were only able to play one round and that was in 45 degree, rainy, windy weather, Kilborn said. And we really did not putt well, we struggled on the greens.
Despite the slow start, Kilborn sees the potential for a turnaround.
We did not have a good scoring day on the greens, but that is the easiest thing to fix, Kilborn said. If we fix that and get off to a good start tomorrow, well build off that confidence.
Leading Illinois State is junior Kyle Vasel and sophomore Kris Wildenradt as they both fired a 74 and are tied for 38th.
Kyle is back on track and Kris played steady, Kilborn said. We just need to concentrate on the greens, gain momentum and get off to a good start tomorrow.
Senior Brian Anderson is tied for 47th after shooting a 75, sophomore Chris Eddy carded a 79 and is tied for 75th, while sophomore Matt Maskel is tied for 81st after hitting a 81.
Five teams are currently tied for first, Southern Mississippi, Southern Florida, SMS, Iowa State, and North Texas, after all shot a 287.
Individually, South Floridas Ryan Shears and SMSs Austin Hackett both shot a 68 and lead the tournament.
The Indian Classic will now only include two rounds, with the final round being played tomorrow morning, beginning at 8 a.m.
