Birds Look to Sweep Sycamores

The Illinois State softball team (25-15-1, 11-6) will try to make it a three game sweep against Missouri Valley Conference foe Indiana State (22-30, 1-16) tomorrow at Redbird Softball Complex at 4 p.m. We know what Indiana State is capable of doing since weve already seen them twice this year, head coach Melinda Fischer said. We have to come ready to play and to put an entire seven innings of solid softball together. Every game from here on out is critical. The Birds defeated the Sycamores twice on March 31, 3-0 and 1-0. In the first match-up, freshman ace Stacy Birk (13-4) tossed a complete game three-hit shutout, striking out eight batters and walking none while Katie Guilbault and Emily Krueger provided the offense firepower. Kate Stake and Dominique Borba powered the Redbirds offensively in the second game, while freshmen Shannon Nicholson (8-6) and Birk combined for another three-hit win. Currently, Illinois State is in third place in the latest Valley standings, while the Sycamores are No. 10. ISU holds a 51-10 advantage in the all-time series.
