Baseball Reunions Slated for May 22

Although 25 years separated the two teams, the 1969 and 1994 Illinois State baseball teams both have key places in history and the players from those groups will get together for a reunion May 22 at Redbird Field. Illinois State fans can share some Redbird nostalgia before the 1 p.m. game with Bradley. Thirty-five years ago, the 1969 team, coached by Duffy Bass, won the NCAA College Division (now Division II) baseball championship. Ten years ago, coach Jeff Stewart led Illinois State to the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament berth. The reunion, which will include a pre-game ceremony, tailgating during the game and a post-game reception, already has commitments from Bass, current Redbird coach Jim Brownlee, who played on the 1969 team, and eight of Brownlees teammates including all-American outfielder Guy Homoly. Among the 1994 team members on hand will be closer Bill Brabec, hard-hitting infielder Don Spaniak and utility player John Setlak. Redbird baseball ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 for students. The Redbirds and Braves are on target to continue to battle for a spot in the 2004 Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, so the game should be exciting.
