It would be easier to list the 2004 Illinois State University volleyball matches that are not on the broadcast schedule. Between WJBC, AM-1230, the flagship station of the Redbird Radio Network, and its broadcast website, wjbc2.com, 25 of the 29 regular-season Redbird volleyball matches will be available to listeners, starting with the opening night match Sept. 1 at Illinois.
Over the past decade, Illinois States home attendance ranks No. 5 in the nation (more than 300,000 total). While Redbird head coach Sharon Dingman loves seeing those fans in the standsboth at home and on the roadshe also appreciates how live, play-by-play broadcasts meet the needs of current fans and expand that fan base.
Without a doubt, our media coverage is one of the things that enables our program to be recognized at a high level, said Dingman, who appreciates the fact that the Bloomington Pantagraph, campus media and area television give substantial coverage to Redbird volleyball as well. The coverage we get is terrific, and it allows family and friends of players to hear nearly every match. Our fans can follow our team through the media.
Eleven of the broadcasts will be live on WJBC, AM-1230, while 14 others are slated for wjbc2.com. All broadcasts also can be accessed through a Stretch Internet connection found on the Illinois State athletics website, www.redbirds.org. Award-winning play-by-play announcer R.C. McBride works with former Redbird coach and administrator Jill Hutchison on most of the matches.
Dingman praised the quality of the broadcasts.
When you listen to R.C. McBride on the radio, you can tell he is committed to our success, said Dingman. Our relationship with WJBC is something really special.
McBride, also the program director at WJBC, recognizes Redbird volleyball is a plus for the station as well.
Our continuing relationship in volleyball is another thing that makes that partnership between WJBC and the Redbirds something special, said McBride.
