The Illinois State football team took to the practice field for the 14th time in 11 days on Tuesday, but rather than suffering from burn out, the Redbirds rallied around the senior leadership and continued to improve.
We got some good things done today, head coach Denver Johnson said. Our defense continues to improve particularly in the front seven. I see some really good things happening up there. Were kind of in that stretch in camp where things are starting to get a little mundane, but theyre doing a good job of getting through it.
The Redbirds are getting through it thanks to seniors like Boomer Grigsby, Mike Larson, Josh Chrestman, Jeremy Melville, Steve Statz and Antwan Oliver.
You have to look to the senior leadership. Its their team, Johnson said. All the young guys will take their cue from the seniors and if they see the seniors fighting through it then they buck up and try to fight through it too. If they see the seniors wilting then that gives them license to do so. We have great seniors right now. Theyre providing great leadership and thats how you get through tough days like this. Your seniors pull you through.
The coaching staff introduced the two-minute offense to the Redbirds and the offensive unit responded as quarterback Yance Vaughan continued his torrid fall season with a 30-yard touchdown strike to Kyle Hill. Earlier, Vaughan found Laurnt Robinson for a 20-yard pass play.
The Redbird running game also responded as Earl Newby pounded out a pair of 10-yard runs and Demetrus Johnson scampered on a 15-yard gain. Freshman Jordan Brewer also got into the mix with a 15-yard reception off a screen pass. Johnson is still looking for the No. 1 back, but is pleased with the progression as a unit.
I dont know that we have had enough opportunities for guys to really separate themselves, Johnson said. They all continue to progress and they all continue to show potential and they all bring some different skills and attributes to the table at running back. Were pleased with their progression, but at some point and time I expect one of them to really pull away from the pack.
The defense was showcased as well in Tuesdays workout. Twice during the team scrimmage the front four batted down pass attempts, while Alex Filin and Mitchell Matthews each snagged interceptions. The front four continued its pressure of the quarterback with Brent Hawkins recording a sack.
The Redbirds return to the practice field on Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. for the first of two practices. In the morning workout the Birds will be in shells, while in the evening the team will conduct its second scrimmage of the camp starting at 7:30 p.m.
Camp Notes:
LaShawn Bullocks MRI indicated a tear of the MCL in his right knee. He will be sidelined for 3-6 weeks.
The team finished practice once again with the Redbird newcomers singing the school fight song at the middle of the field to the veterans.
