Birds Down ASC United in Final Exhibition

The Illinois State womens soccer team wrapped up its preseason with a 6-0 win over the ASC United Soccer Club of St. Charles, Ill. ASC dominated early in the first period, charging toward the goal and recording two quick shots. After that minor scare, the Redbird got it together and junior Heather Forsyth was able to push forward from her sweeper position to score off a Taylor Casement pass in the 15th minute of play. Senior Robyn Brady then snuck one past the keeper a little over two minutes later after a Michelle Brumbaugh corner kick was knocked around in front of the goal. Head coach Pete Kowall was pleased with his teams effort in its final warm-up before the regular season kicks off in less than a week. We played much better today, our rhythm was much better, Kowall said. We used a few different lineups and that was good since were still trying to figure out who the starting 11 are going to be. It was much better in terms of organizing in the middle, rhythm in play and getting in line. The Birds looked more aggressive at the start of the second 30-minute period, but once again ASC United managed to record the first couple shots. However, freshman Yvonne Northover helped increase the ISU lead on a pass to Brady to give the Redbirds a 3-0 lead heading into the final 30 minute stanza. Sophomore Jaclyn Rucinsky, Northover and sophomore Meghan Boler each scored in the final period to help Illinois State earn the win. Weve still got some work to do but I think well be ready for our first game, Kowall added. We still have to finish better and our forward movement has to be better, but were getting there. The Birds kick off the regular season at home on Friday with a 4 p.m. match-up against Valparaiso.
