The Illinois State womens soccer team improved its record to 2-0 Tuesday with a 2-1 win over the Billikens of Saint Louis.
The Birds got off to a slow start as the Billikens were able to take their first shot on goal only five minutes into the game. The Birds however were not allowed a shot until the 22nd minute in the first half.
Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year Heather Forsyth scored the first goal of the night for the Birds with assistance from Michelle Brumbaugh. Brumbaugh set up for a corner kick allowing Forsyth to head the ball into the goal. The goal was Forsyths first of the season.
However, the Billikens rallied back in the 28th minute of play and put a point on the board with a goal from Maureen Hughs with assistance from Jamie Perry.
We played much better today in terms of rhythm and as a team, said head coach Pete Kowall. Saint Louis is a very good team. They are very technical and play the ball well. In terms of us, we defended well enough even though they had many chances to score.
At the 17th minute in the second half Joyce Kleinheinz was able to knock in a goal off a deflection to put the Birds up 2-1.
We weathered the storm at the right time today and had two great goals from Heather and Joyce, said Kowall. This was a great win for us. Saint Louis is a good team, individually and as whole.
The Birds will be on the road this weekend with a match up against Oakland Friday September 3 at 4 p.m.
