Senior Vasel Looks to Improve on 5th Place Finish

As the Illinois State mens golf team heads to Lawrence, Kansas to participate in the Kansas Invitational on Sept. 20 and 21, the Birds will look to senior Kyle Vasel to lead the team. Vasel is coming off a fifth place finish at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate, firing a low round of 70, one under par. Coming off a disappointing second place finish at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate head coach Harland Kilborn feels it is important for seniors to step up and lead the team. We need to turn our game up a notch, said Kilborn. Four out of five golfers on our team have played in a lot of tournaments and know what it takes to win. Playing for the Redbirds are seniors Denny Bull, Dustin Edwards and Vasel, along with sophomore Matt Miller, and freshman Mike Imburgia. The Jayhawks welcome 13 teams including one Missouri Valley school, Wichita State. Other teams include; Oklahoma City, Saint. Louis, Western Kentucky, Houston, UMKC, Nebraska, Northern Iowa and Texas-San Antonio. Coach Kilborn knows the competition will be greater in this tournament. This tournament has a much tougher field. The course is more difficult as well, said Kilborn. Our players are up for the challenge. Competition begins Monday September 20 at 8:30 a.m. with a 36-hole shotgun start with the final 18 holes on Tuesday. ###
