Senior Kyle Vasel continues to lead the Illinois State mens golf team firing a two-round total of 141 (68,73) after day one of the Cardinal Intercollegiate in Louisville, Ky., good for fourth place. In a field of 19 teams the Redbirds sit in seventh place carding a team total of 588 (301,287).
Vasel led the field after round one firing a four-under 68. Head Coach Harland Kilborn was happy with the way his team fought back with a 287, after firing a first round of 301,
Kyle gave us a great effort today, said Kilborn. His play kept us in striking range of the top of the leader board.
Charlie Woo of Louisville posted the two-round low of 135 (69,66), while leading his team to their first place finish after day one, carding a team total of 562 (282,280).
Other Birds posted solid scores including sophomore Anthony Imburgia who is tied for 30th carding a 148 (77,71), and senior Denny Bull who sits behind Imburgia by one stroke with a 149 (77,72), tied for 39th.
Kilborn is excited to see this lineup play as a team rather than individuals.
It is so important for these guys to have trust in the rest of their teammates, to know that it is alright to drop a stroke knowing there are four other guys to pick it up, said Kilborn. They are real comfortable knowing that any guy can take their scores under par.
Kilborn and the Redbirds finish the last 18-holes of the Cardinal Intercollegiate Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
