Sophomore outside hitter Maura McCarthy did not return to Illinois State University and likely will transfer to Illinois-Chicago for her final two seasons of volleyball eligibility.
McCarthy played in 107 games in her two seasons at Illinois State, averaging just under one kill and one dig per game with a .156 hitting percentage. According to Redbird coach Sharon Dingman, the Mother McAuley High School graduate was looking for more court time.
Maura made significant contributions to our program whenever we called on her, said Dingman. She wants to contribute more and she will have that opportunity at UIC. I dont have a problem with that at all.
Injuries and illness put McCarthy in the Redbird starting lineup for four matches in 2003, and the Birds went 4-0 in those matches as McCarthy averaged 2.25 kills and a .274 hitting percentage. In 2004, she frequently entered in late-game situations as a serving specialist. McCarthy was a member of the AFNI Athletics Honor Roll in all three of her semesters at ISU.
We appreciate the two years she gave to Illinois State, said Dingman. We support her decision and believe she will have a good last two years at UIC.
