Goetting Captures First, Birds Pick Up First Win

Redbird junior Megan Goetting added to her first place hardware Friday evening at the Cardinal Classic as she posted a 9.775 on the balance beam, capturing first place. The Illinois State gymnastics team went on to pick up their first win of the season, scoring a 190.275, in Muncie, Ind., at the five-team meet. Goettings score was a season high, as well as a personal best. Also competing on the floor exercise, she carded a 9.625, receiving 10th place. In last weekends competition against Southeast Missouri State, Goetting took home first-place honors for her routines on both the balance beam and the floor exercise. The Redbirds posted three top team scores of the season on the uneven bars (47.800), the balance beam (46.925) and the floor exercise (47.975). The Redbirds final team score, a 190.275, was not only a season high for the team but was also good enough for fourth place at the Cardinal Classic. Illinois won the five-team competition, scoring a 192.325, edging out Western Michigan (192.125) who claimed second. Host school Ball State finished in third place with a 191.950. Rounding out the competitors at Fridays competition was Wisconsin-Eau Claire, who posted a 195.600. Freshman Amanda Candler finished in sixth place for the Redbirds on the bars, turning in a 9.700. She also claimed 11th place on the vault, with a 9.625. Additionally, senior captain Courtney Johnson was a top-finisher for Illinois State as she placed sixth with her floor routine, earning a 9.675. ###
