Junior Lorenzo Gordon became the third player to sweep both the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Player and Newcomer of the Week honors Monday after leading the Illinois State mens basketball team into a third-place standing in the conference with their first back-to-back road wins since the 2001-02 season.
In addition to lifting the Redbirds winning percentage, Gordon has taken over the league lead in scoring and offensive rebounding. The St. Louis native matched his career high with 26 points at Indiana State and paved the way for Trey Guidry's heroics with his third double-double in the last four games (19 points and 11 rebounds at Creighton).
Gordon averaged 22.5 points per game for the week, while collecting nine rebounds per contest, including nine offensive caroms. He shot 18-for-29 (.621) from the field, and 9-of-11 (.818) from the foul line, while logging 39 minutes per game.
Gordon and the Redbirds return to action Tuesday night when they host Evansville at Redbird Arena at 7:05 p.m.
