SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -
In the semi-finals of the Missouri Valley Conference Individuals, the Redbirds won all matches in doubles and singles and will be advancing to the finals. The `Birds participated in six single Flights and two double Flights in the semi-finals.
Fun was how Hoover described day two of the Valley Individuals.
"What was fun about today was that every match in singles was played in three sets," said Hoover. "Winning all of those six three set matches was great to watch, and I was very pleased to see all my players do so well."
In Flight one singles, Katri Miller defeated Meghana Paritala from Northern Iowa 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Emilie Sechaud did the same in her match against Wichita State's player Wendi Webster 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. In number four singles, Véronique Parke-Bédard beat Teri Chan of Bradley 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. For number five singles, Carolyne Parent defeated Paty Manzur of Missouri State, and Nicole Schneider of Flight six singles took victories from Mali Gakovic Missouri State 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Flight seven singles, Matea Simovic beat Daria Zawislak of Drake 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Megan Rozboril did the same in her match against her own teammate Ashley Maxwell. Simovic and Rozboril will then head off against one another for the Flight seven title in the finals tomorrow.
Semi-finals for doubles resulted in more victories for the Redbirds.
In number two doubles, Michelle Rabinovich and Parke-Bédard took out Fadzai Masiyazi and Marie Caujolle of Indiana State in the semi-finals 8-2. Schneider and Simovic defeated Northern Iowa pair Sara Kendall and Samantha Schnobel 8-1.
Hoover hopes the team will continue their strong play as they go against tougher competition tomorrow in the finals.
"It's not going to be easy to win the finals, and they are going to have to fight and work hard," said Hoover. "But I know that if we bring it like we did today we will be successful in bringing home titles."
After the long matches today, the team will need their rest as they approach the final championships. Matches will begin 9a.m. on Sunday for the finals, and awards will be received at the end of competition.
