The Illinois State gymnastics team posted a solid score in its second meeting against Illinois-Chicago, but the Flames handed the Redbirds their third conference loss, besting the Birds 193.440-190.025.
This dual meet at the UIC Physical Education Building was the second meet between the conference rivals in two weeks. The squads met on Feb. 5 at Illinois, where Illinois State carded its first loss to the Flames.
Carolina Posada was the top finisher for the Redbirds in two events, the vault and the uneven bars. Posada posted a 9.475 on the vault, placing seventh overall. She went on to score 9.625 on the bars, taking home sixth place.
Other top finishers for Illinois State were Megan Goetting, who carded 9.725 on the beam, tying for second place. Tove Fjordholm tied for sixth place with fellow Bird Amy Biedenharn on the floor exercise, both scored a 9.650.
Cheryl Berezan was the lone all-around competitor for Illinois State. The freshman posted a season-best score through four events, 37.275. She finished fourth in the all-around. Illinois-Chicagos Jackie Jaworowicz won the all-around competition, with a score of 38.750.
Illinois State head coach Kristin Montero was pleased with her teams effort.
We did so much better tonight, said Montero. The scoring was really tight, so I think we did a lot better than our scores reflect. Tonights meet was so much of an improvement, which will be good for our confidenceI think we will be able to build off this.
The Redbirds return to action Feb. 9 when they host Northern Illinois and Wisconsin-Whitewater at 7 p.m. in Horton Fieldhouse.
