After a long cold winter in central Illinois, the Illinois State mens golf team began their spring season in Placida Fla., against Illinois in the 2005 Tinervin Cup. In match play format the Birds were defeated by the Illini in eight of nine contests, losing 8-l.
For the second year the two schools have begun their spring seasons in Florida. The tournament has been named the Tinervin Cup in honor of Illinois State alumnus Jeff Tinervin, a supporter of both the Redbird and Illini golf programs.
The tournament began with a two player best-ball format with the Illini taking all three. The afternoon featured singles match play where the Birds were defeated 5-1.
Head coach
Ray Kralis takes the positives with him as he heads back to Illinois.
Of course we came here to win, but we also came here to compete, Kralis said. I leave with a lot of positives. We played Illinois a lot tighter than the score shows. They are a good team that played a good tournament. Being able to get down here to Florida and get a head start on the spring season is invaluable.
The Birds fly next to San Antonio Texas to compete in the 2005 Roadrunner Intercollegiate Feb. 28.
