Advancing to Saturdays individual finals, Cheryl Berezan and Anne Fjordholm represented Illinois State on the second day of competition at the Callaway Bank Cat Classic in Columbia, Mo. Berezan finished eleventh on the floor exercise, while Fjordholm placed ninth overall on the balance beam.
Berezan finished with a 9.400 on the floor exercise, as her teammate Fjordholm notched a 9.625 on the beam.
Illinois State head coach Kristin Montero was pleased that the ISU pair had the opportunity to compete against fine competition.
Both Anne and Cheryl did very well tonight, said Montero. It was great to have Illinois State athletes competing in the finals. I am just proud of the way the pair represented our program.
After Fridays four-team competition, the top ten finishers in each of the four events moved on to the finals, held Saturday. Because of ties in scoring on day one, bars and floor had eleven competitors. These gymnasts then competed on the vault, bars, beam and floor, and the top six finishers were awarded.
Host Missouri boasted 17 athletes in Saturdays finals, the most of any of the competing schools, which included New Hampshire and Towson State. Mizzous Alisha Robinson (9.825), Jodie Heinicka (9.800) and Kelley Andersen (9.750) swept the uneven bars, taking the top three spots for the Tigers. The team went on to take two of the top three finishes in each of the three remaining events: vault, balance beam, and floor.
Montero was impressed with the two-day meet.
This was just a really fun meet, said Montero. It was run really welleverything went very smooth. It was just really exciting to see such good gymnastics and to be able to take part in that, both as a coach as well as a spectator.
The Redbirds return to competition on Sunday March 6, taking on conference rival Southeast Missouri State in at 2 p.m. in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
