Redbird Gymnasts Finish in Fourth

Though the Illinois State gymnastics team carded its highest floor score of the season, the Redbirds finished in fourth place, scoring a 187.025, at Huff Hall in Champaign, Saturday evening. Iowa won the four-team meet, posting a score of 194.025, a season-high for the Gymhawks. Host school, Illinois, came in a close second with a 193.475 team total. Illinois States conference and in-state rival, Illinois-Chicago, finished in third, carding a 192.675. The floor exercise was the Birds highest scoring event, as the team posted a 48.475, a season-high for the squad. Redbird freshman Cheryl Berezan was the top-finisher for Illinois State in the event Berezan scored a 9.750 for eighth place overall. Right behind Berezan was captain Courtney Johnson, as the senior turned in a 9.725 to take home 10th place. Also a consistent event for Illinois State, the balance beam saw several quality routines. The teams total on the beam was 47.700. Megan Goetting was the highest scorer for the Redbirds on the event, as the junior carded a 9.675 to take home eighth place. Berezan was the only all-around competitor for Illinois State at Saturdays meet. She carded a 36.650 through four events to finish fourth on the night. Illionois Lauren Newcomb took home first-place honors with a 38.650. Illinois State moves to 1-11, 0-2 on the season and will travel to Illinois-Chicago on February 12, for another conference match-up against the Flames. ###
