Imburgia Leads Birds in Texas

Despite solid play by sophomore Anthony Imburgia, the Illinois State mens golf team sits in 11th place after day one of the 2005 Roadrunner Intercollegiate in San Antonio, Texas. With a great opportunity for the Redbirds to move up in district standings the Birds are looking to make a move with only 18-holes left. Head coach Ray Kralis was disappointed with the play of the team as a whole, but was also optimistic for tomorrows round. We needed a team effort to make a move in the district and we did not get that today, Kralis said. I was however very pleased with the individual play of Kyle (Vasel) and Anthony (Imburgia). We just need all five guys to put up low numbers. Imburgia led the Birds with a 146, 2-over (74,72), and senior Kyle Vasel carded a four-over, 148 (76,72). The Birds sit ahead of No. 11 Nebraska after day one and look to cut the lead held by Wichita State (280,291) and Baylor (278,293) both posting 571 tied for first place. It was good to see Kyle (Vasel) bounce back from his first round and put up a par score, Kralis said. We are excited about tomorrows round and we hope to build on what we learned today. The Redbirds tee off at 8 a.m. tomorrow with the final 18-holes.
