Last week, Senior Guillermo Gomez of the Illinois State mens tennis team posted a 3-1 singles record and a 2-1 doubles record, both at the No. 2 position. This week his hard work paid off as he earned the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week.
The long week for Gomez started when he gained the only singles point for the Birds in a 6-1 loss to No. 38 Southern Methodist. The following day, versus Tyler Junior College, Gomez teamed up with Alban Renard at the No. 2 doubles position to win the decisive match that gave the Redbirds a 4-3 win. During a rain-shortened competition against Montana State, Gomez won his singles match after being down in the second set (6-0, 5-1). And in the Birds last match of the week, he won both the singles and doubles matches against Lamar.
Gomez will be back in action this weekend when the Birds host Vincennes on March 26, at 7 p.m., and St. Louis on March 27, at 1 p.m. Both matches will be held at the McCormick Courts.
