Birds Dominate Billikens 7-0

Guillermo Gomez, the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week led the Illinois State mens tennis team to its third non-conference win in a row Sunday, as they beat St. Louis 7-0, at the Evergreen Racquet Club. Gomez is 5-1 in his last six singles matches and 3-1 in his last doubles matches. Today he overpowered James Wilson in straight sets, (6-2, 6-1) at the No. 2 singles position. Head coach Greg Kennett is thrilled to see his senior playing with so much confidence. Guillermo played very well today, in both doubles and singles, said Kennett. He has a lot of great confidence right know and believes that he can beat anybody. In other singles action, Djordje Uskokovic won his third consecutive match at the No. 1 position, dropping Tom de Larzac, (6-2, 6-3). And at the No. 4 spot Alfredo Lagarda won his third match in a row dropping Matt Rineberg in straight sets, (6-3, 6-2). The Redbirds swept their opponents in doubles play for the second consecutive match, behind a solid effort from Gomez and Alban Renard at the No. 2 spot. The duo thrashed the team of Wilson and Rineberg, (8-0). Kennett believes his Birds are peaking at just the right time. We seem to be playing our best tennis at this moment, and that is what you really hope for as a team, said Kennett. Every team peaks at some point, no matter what the sport is, you try and hold it off as long as you can, but we have reached that point were we are really playing as a team, so hopefully we can keep it going. The Redbirds will be back in action on April 6, at 3 p.m., when they travel to Bradley for their first conference match.
