Defensively, the Illinois State football team has showcased an ability to make plays using its quickness throughout spring practice. That ability was again on display during the Redbirds 21-period session Wednesday.
Head coach Denver Johnson has noticed an improvement on a unit that features a group of veterans led by
Niall Campbell,
Cameron Siskowic, and Brent Hawkins, who had a sack on quarterback Nick Gehrts during Wednesdays session. Campbell and Hawkins also combined to bring down Brian Thompson for a 5-yard loss during the scrimmage period. Its that ability to swarm the ball carrier that impresses Johnson the most.
We talk to the guys about hunting in packs, Johnson said. We try and get a lot of people around the ball and Im really pleased with that aspect of our team. We missed some tackles here and there, but Im happy with the improvement were making.
The defensive backfield has also shown improvement, including
Cameron Bateman who had a pair of pass deflections, one against Kevett Mickle, the other against Laurnt Robinson.
Former wide receiver Ramon Barber has been playing cornerback during the entire spring season and Johnson is happy with the seniors progress.
Hes showing some promise, Johnson said of Barber. Hes got the ability to make the transition. He needs to continue to develop, but hes certainly headed in the right direction.
The offensive unit also had an impressive afternoon. Tight end Kevin Kreger and Robinson both made leaping catches in coverage, while
Kevin Brockway finished off the practice by running for a first down on a quarterback keeper. Johnson continues to be impressed with the play of running backs
Rafael Rice,
Pierre Rembert and Thompson.
Im pleased with our backfield, were definitely going to get something going back there, Johnson said.
The Redbirds return to practice Friday for a 3:30 p.m. session at Hancock Stadium.
Camp Notes:
Senior tight end Jonathan Denley suffered a separated left shoulder during practice on Saturday and will miss the remainder of spring.
