Illinois State senior Kyle Vasel was named Missouri Valley Conference Golfer of the Week after carding a tournament and course record seven-under-par 65 to lead the Redbirds to the team championship at the ASU Indian Classic in Jonesboro, Ark. Drake freshman Mike Schnegelberger shares the honors with Vasel after finishing in fourth at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz. This is Vasels second career MVC Golfer of the Week honor.
The Greenville, Ill., native tied the course record at Ridge Point Country Club and set a record in the Indian Classic. Vasels low round led the Birds to their own tournament record low score of 275, finishing in first place, 14 strokes ahead of host Arkansas State (289).
No one is more deserving of this award than Kyle, head coach
Ray Kralis said. He manages the golf course so well and makes it look easy. His ball striking and patients was key to his record breaking performance.
Vasel and the Redbirds look to take this momentum into the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference championship April 25-26, at TPC at Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.
