Spring Report #12: Birds Showcase More Intensity

The intensity from Saturdays practice carried over into Sunday as the Illinois State football team finished its 12th of 14 practices before the Spring Game April 23. The Redbirds took to the field Sunday for a shortened practice in full pads, which included an hour-and-a-half long scrimmage. Head coach Denver Johnson was again pleased with the intensity, especially after linebacker Pat Cucci and cornerback Cameron Bateman teamed up for a vicious hit on tight end Kevin Kreger during the scrimmage. I think that practice in general was very good again today, Johnson said. Im seeing a lot of great things defensively and were making some moves offensively. I was disappointed with practice on Friday, but was happy with it yesterday and again happy with it today. Quarterback Luke Drone got the majority of the snaps early on in the scrimmage, connecting with Laurnt Robinson for a 50-yard gain. On the next series, Drone found Robinson again, this time throwing through two defenders. Drone also connected with Kyle Hill on more than one occasion Sunday, finding the sophomore from Orlando on a swing pass for a first down. Two plays later, Drone connected with Hill again, scoring a touchdown from 35 yards out and breaking through several defenders in the process. Hill scored another touchdown off a pass from Nick Gehrts, making a spin move and running 45 yards in the process. Kyle did a good job making some nice runs after the catch, and I think thats what was most impressive about his practice today, Johnson said. Hes having a very nice spring. The Redbirds return to the Hancock Stadium turf Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. practice.
