Illinois State Soccer Hosts Developmental Clinic on Sunday

March 30, 2005

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's soccer team will host a developmental soccer clinic on Sunday, April 3 from 1:30-3:30 p.m at the PCSL Fields. The clinic is open to boys and girls, grades eight and younger, and will provide instruction on the fundamentals of the game of soccer.

The clinic, which will have Illinois State soccer coaches Pete Kowall, Stacy Welp and Jenny Kehl and the Redbirds women's soccer players on hand, will provide direction and aide in the development of soccer fundamentals through passing, dribbling, shooting, heading and other fundamentals.

The PCSL Fields are located behind the Bloomington-Normal Regional Airport on Ireland Grove Road. The cost of the clinic is $10 per person. There will be no pre-registration and those planning on attending the Illinois State Soccer Development Clinic should meet at the PCSL soccer fields prior to the start of the clinic.

The Illinois State women's soccer program recently put on a developmental clinic in the Chicago area in memory of Julie Heideke, a former Illinois State women's soccer player who died in an automobile accident in 1998. This year the clinic was well attended with 50 local area kids participating. The Illinois State soccer coaches and players traveled to the Chicago area to instruct at the clinic.

Not only does the women's soccer program honor Heideke each year through the clinic near her hometown, but at an ISU women's soccer game, the Heideke Award is presented to an ISU player who follows Heideke's path in commitment, spirit, determination, leadership, sportsmanship, academics, morality and concern for others. Cheryl Sarnwick was the 2004 Heideke Award winner and played for the Redbirds from 2000-03.
