CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -
The Illinois State women's soccer team took third place at the 2nd Annual Illinois Cup hosted by the University of Illinois. The Redbirds defeated Eastern Illinois 4-0 on penalty kicks to finish third in the tournament.
The Redbirds began the day on a high note with a victory over Loyola, 2-1. Yvonne Northover led the `Birds scoring two goals to give the `Birds the win. However, the second game of the day was not as pleasant as DePaul defeated the `Birds, 2-1. Joyce Kleinheinz was the only Redbird to score in the loss.
The `Birds did bounce back however in the third place game defeating Eastern Illinois 4-0 on penalty kicks. After two thirty-minute halves the game was scoreless and went to P.K's. Megan Boler, Taylor Casement, Jaclyn Roepke and Joyce Kleinheinz each recorded goals to give the `Birds the win.
Head coach Pete Kowall was pleased with what he saw in the tournament.
"I saw some really good things today," said Kowall. "The kids worked hard and it was good to play three different types of teams."
