Redbird Wrap: Practice #12

Aug. 15, 2005

News and Notes:

- The Redbirds were scheduled for two practices Monday, but decided to cancel their morning practice and just go with their scheduled 7:30 p.m. practice. Once again, the `Birds got the feel of playing under the lights of Hancock Stadium working through 24, five minute periods.

- "There's something about the lights that invigorates the guys," said head coach Denver Johnson. "I just hope that they keep that same energy level and bring it to the field for the six night games we play this season."

- The offense focused on converting third down situations for most of the practice. Redbird receivers and backs worked on short routes to get first downs off of third and five and third and eight situations. - After throwing the ball well throughout practice, coach Johnson chose Luke Drone to break down practice.

Execution Time for Redbird Offense:

- Throughout the 7-on-7 drills and during the team session, the Illinois State offense played almost perfect football, not turning the ball over once during either session.

- After watching practice, coach Johnson stated, "This was the best offensive execution we've had all camp."

Barber Continues to Cut Mistakes:

- Senior defensive back Ramon Barber continues to adapt to his new cornerback position, after being moved from wide receiver in the spring. Barber showed flashes of a shutdown corner Monday, breaking up several passes and picking off a Kevin Brockway pass during the one-on-one receiver/defensive back drill.

The Cirafesi-Hayden Connection:

- Quarterback Wally Cirafesi seems to have found his go-to receiver in Marcus Hayden. Twice on Monday, Cirafesi aired the ball out for 35 yard gains to Hayden down the sideline. Hayden's second catch was a diving catch as he was falling out of bounds, converting on the third and long scenario posed by the Redbird coaching staff.

Seniors Put `End' to Drives:

- Twice on Monday, ISU senior defensive ends stopped third down conversions by the Redbird offense. Mike Blough was the first to get to the quarterback, stopping Drone in the backfield for a five yard loss. Brent Hawkins continued his sack barrage during fall practice, recording another one late in the team session against Cirafesi.

Quotable:

- "All the vital signs are strong for this to be a breakout year," said Johnson. "The jazz level is tremendous and there a lot of smiles out there on the field. We're working and competing hard while still having a lot of fun. All we need to do now is get some wins and the morale level will stay sky high."
