Men's Tennis has Success at Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Illinois State men's tennis team opened their season in the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center at the Ball State Invitational. After the first day, the `Birds competed with optimum performance.

Alban Renard and Yohann Nograbat, competed in the singles A Flight. Although Renard did not produce the results he would have liked in doubles action, he dominated singles play along with Nograbat. Renard advanced to the quarterfinals by winning both rounds in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-4. Nograbat was also successful in making the quarterfinals. Head Coach Greg Kennett is very impressed with his play.

"Yohann played very well today," said Kennett. "After some controversy during one match he fought back and stayed mentally strong."

In the singles B Flight, Djordje Uskokovic and Alfredo Lagarda, also advanced to the quarterfinals. Uskokovic defeated both his opponents in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 and 7-6, 6-4 as well as Lagarda 6-4, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-2. In the doubles B Flight Uskokovic teamed up with Nograbat to make the quarterfinals. Coach Kennett was enthusiastic to see the duo in action.

"Yohann and Djordje had a good match up today and looked strong together," said Kennett.

Oscar Beich won his first match of the season in the singles Flight C in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 taking him to the quarterfinals. After an unsuccessful first round, Tim Link recovered and managed to advance to the singles B Flight Consolation quarterfinals. The two paired up to make the quarterfinals in doubles C Flight.

Coach Kennett looks forward to facing more competition on Saturday.

"We are going to play some of the top teams at this tournament," said Kennett. "Our squad will be battling tomorrow to see who goes to the finals."

The Redbirds will face more competition on Saturday beginning at 1pm. The champions will be determined on Sunday when the invitational concludes. -###-
