COLUMBIA, Mo. -
The `Birds started the second day of Missouri's Tournament at 10am today with high hopes and goals of winning more matches and advancing to the finals. They did just that.
Double pair Katri Miller and Véronique Parke-Bédard had a great run in the doubles draw. They went undefeated against all competitors and will be advancing to the finals to play for the championship.
While doubles were a success for the `Birds, the singles became another highlight for the team. All together, the Redbirds only lost two matches in all three flights of the single tournaments. This made head coach Chris Hoover very pleased with the team's performance.
"We had a good day," said Hoover. "Almost everybody won a single match in the tournament, and I'm very happy."
Emilie Sechaud played in the Flight A singles and beat the number one player from Saint Louis University 6-3, 7-6. Miller and also found success in singles by defeating University of Missouri 7-6, 7-6.
Coach Hoover thinks the success of today proves to how the team is improving.
"I am very happy with how we did today and it shows in our performance that we are getting better everyday," said Hoover.
After a great run today, Hoover and the team only want more. For the last day of the tournament, Hoover hopes for Miller and Bédard to bring home the doubles championship, as well as for more wins in the singles. From what he saw today, Hoover thinks the `Birds will bring home more victories to Illinois State.
"I think tomorrow we are going to do well," said Hoover. "If we do what we did today, we will be successful in the last day of the tournament."
The Redbirds will begin play at 10am on Sunday in the Missouri tournament and play will be round-robin.
