DEKALB, Ill. -
Knotting the score at 1-1, Illinois State senior Heather Forsyth scored her first goal of the season Sunday afternoon, as the Redbird soccer team went on to record a double-overtime time with Northern Illinois at the Huskie Soccer Field.
Catapulting her team into halftime, Northern Illinois freshman Ingrid Gonzalez scored the first goal of the game in the 35th minute to put the Huskies up at the end of the first period. The first goal of the game was scored on Illinois State's goalkeeper Erica Goethel, who recorded seven saves on the day.
Forsyth answered for the Redbirds in the 85th minute. Redbird junior Meghan Boler took a corner kick that was redirected to Shannon Duggan, who fed Forsyth the ball for the tying goal. This was Duggan's first assist of her Redbird career.
Carrie Dvorak was in goal for the Huskies, recording six saves for the day. Illinois State head coach Pete Kowall was impressed with the play of the Northern Illinois' senior.
"Their goalkeeper was amazing," said Kowall. "She was just unbelievable...there were four or five shots that we were certain were goals and she would come up with them somehow. I was really impressed with the play of Dvorak.
"Both teams played and worked really hard," Kowall added. "Marci Miller (NIU coach) has done an outstanding job with their program. It was hard to break Northern down. We made strides in the second half and I'm proud of my team for coming back in the second half to score the tying goal."
Illinois State led Northern Illinois in shots 14-10, and also in corner kicks 14-8.
With the game ending in a draw, Illinois State is now 3-2-2 on the season, while Northern Illinois' record is 2-3-2.
After being on the road this weekend, Illinois State returns to Normal, Ill., next week for two games at Adelaide Street Field. The Redbirds will play host to Loyola on Thursday, Sept. 22, for a 4 p.m. game and then welcome UW-Milwaukee on Sunday, Sept. 25 for a matchup beginning at 11:30 a.m.
