MILWAUKEE, Wis. -
The Redbirds finished their second day at the Milwaukee Classic victorious in both singles and doubles. The' Birds shut out Dayton in doubles 3-0, and defeated Marquette in singles 5-1. The team's success has put them as favorites for winning the event.
Ashley Maxwell and Katri Miller paired up in number one doubles to defeat Dayton 8-6. Number two double team, Michelle Rabinovich and Véronique Parke-Bédard, won their match against Dayton 8-4. Nicole Schneider and Matea Simovic concluded the doubles by earning their win from Dayton 8-3.
Head coach Chris Hoover was very happy with how each pair performed in doubles and knows it will benefit the team.
"The two and three doubles were a highlight, and I am going to keep those doubles together for tomorrow," said Hoover. "This benefits us because I can tell which doubles work well together and we can use that in future conference matches."
In number one singles Katri Miller took on Marquette and lost in her first set 0-6. However, she came back defeating Marquette in the last sets 6-4, 6-4. Miller's come back impressed Hoover.
"I was so impressed with how Katri came back to win. Even though she lost in her first round, she hung in there and played well enough to get through it and win." Said Hoover
The success the `Birds had in doubles continued in their singles matches against Marquette.
Emilie Sechaud played in number two singles and defeated Marquette in straight sets. Carolyne Parent, number five singles, and Nicole Schneider, number six, also won their matches in straight sets. Park-Bédard won her singles in the number four position 6-3, 7-5. Maxwell lost to Marquette in number three singles 0-3.
Hoover's focus is now on the last day of the tournament and what he and the team need to do to win the event.
"We are going to have to fiddle around for tomorrow. We have a question mark at who is to play at number two singles and number one doubles," said Hoover. "We are going to try to put Megan Rozboril with Katri in doubles and see how that goes."
The `Redbirds will start the tournament at 9 a.m. in doubles against UW-Green Bay and will end with singles against Dayton. The awards presentation will be at the Tennis Pavilion at the end of competition.
