Maskel, Miller Lead `Birds to a Fifth-Place Finish at Louisville

Sept. 27, 2005

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior Matt Miller carded a three-under-par 69 in the third-round of the Cardinal Intercollegiate to finish the tournament in second-place with a three-round total of 209 (74, 66, 69). Senior Matt Maskel also fired a one-under-par 71 in the third-round to finish tied for third-place with a three-round total of 210 (65, 74, 71).

The Redbirds finished the tournament tied for fifth-place with Wyoming, posting a three-round total of four-over-par 868 (287, 290, 291) and eleven shots off the lead. The four teams ahead of the `Birds in the standings all finished under-par for the tournament.

Head coach Ray Kralis was satisfied with the performances from Miller and Maskel.

"Matt Miller and Matt Maskel both played extremely solid tournaments," said Kralis. "Miller has kept his pace going and continues to put up low scores. It was also good to see Maskel back in form. He will take a lot of confidence from this tournament."

Senior Kris Wildenradt fired a two-over-par 74 to finish tied for 40th with a three-round total of 223 (75, 74, 74). Chris Eddy finished tied for 54th with a three round total of 228 (73, 76, 79). Senior Jason Kemp posted a three-round total of 230 (75, 78, 77) to finish tied for 64th.

Host Louisville finished tied with Marquette for the title after 54-holes, with Marquette winning on the third playoff hole. Austin Peay's Chris Barron took home medalist honors after shooting a third-round 67 to finish with a three-round total of 205 (69, 69, 67).

Kralis was disappointed with the team's final standings but is optimistic about the future.

"I was a little disappointed today after the rounds we had yesterday," said Kralis. "We didn't make the move in the standings like I had hoped. But this tournament was a step in the right direction. We can build off of this and finish the fall season strong."

The Redbirds will travel to Springfield, Mo., to play in the Rivercut Invitational hosted by Missouri State on October 17-18.
