Men's Tennis Closes Fall Season at ITA Central Region Championships

Oct. 21, 2006

TULSA, Okla. - The `Birds will be returning home early as they were unable to make it into day four of the ITA Central Region Championships on Saturday. The tournament, hosted by Tulsa is being held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla.

Head coach Greg Kennett feel that despite the losses there were some bright spots.

"Alfredo Lagarda played really well in both singles and doubles today," said Kennett.

Lagarda was able to post a 6-1, 6-0 win over Tulsa's Olof Sjolund, he then advanced into the round of eight, but was unable to play because it interfered with his doubles match with teammate Yohann Nograbat. In doubles Lagarda and Nograbat defeated Dinko Halachev and Edson Abrao of Arkansas-Little Rock (8-2) in the round of 16. The duo then advanced into the round of eight, but were defeated by Arnau Brugues and Federico Soriano of Tulsa (8-3).

In other tennis action, Luka Marinkovic was defeated Nathan Byrnes of Oklahoma State (6-1, 6-4). Marinkovic then teamed with Daniel Tobar in doubles and were defeated by Oklahoma's Ryan Thomas and Ondrej Kacmer (8-5).

"We were placed in tough draws and competed with top players early in the tournament," said Kennett. "We have a lot of work to do to get ready for this spring."
