`Birds Finish Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invite in Sixth

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Senior Hilary Anderson led the way for the Illinois State women's golf team firing a three-round total of 232 (77, 79, 76) and tied for 10th place individually as the Redbirds finished the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational in sixth-place Tuesday at Alvamar Golf Club.

The Redbirds finished the invitational with a total of 940 (312, 318, 310) and were just nine shots back from second-place.

Head coach Ray Kralis was pleased with the team's third round performance.

"Our third-round score certainly held its own," Kralis said. "The teams that finished ahead of us earned it."

Both sophomore Tiffany Hockensmith (77, 78, 80) and freshman Britt Knutson (77, 80, 78) tied for 19th individually. Freshman Stacey Miller shot 238 (81, 81, 76) tied for 29th overall, while Olivia Campos shot 268 (90, 88, 90) and tied for 83rd.

"We saw a lot of positives," Kralis said. "And we separated ourselves from the Valley."

Host Kansas took home first-place with a total of 917 (304, 306, 307). Notre Dame finished 14 shots back from the lead with a total of 931 (316, 309, 306) for second-place, while Arkansas-Little Rock shot 934 (306, 318, 310) and finished in third. North Texas (313, 314, 309) and Missouri (311, 319, 306) tied for fourth-place. Finishing right behind Illinois State was Kansas State who fired a three-round total of 942 (317, 317, 308) for seventh-place. Iowa State finished two shots behind for eighth followed by Wisconsin (ninth), Wichita State (10th), Evansville (11th) and Indiana State (12th). Missouri-Kansas City finished 13th followed by Drake (14th), Creighton (15th) and Southern Mississippi (16th).

Kralis was pleased with the way the team played in the tournament.

"We are growing as a team and we are gaining confidence in ourselves," Kralis said. "We are looking forward to getting into the competition again next week."

The Redbirds will compete in The Shoot-Out at the Legends, their final tournament of the fall season, on Oct. 9-10 in Franklin, Ind.
