PLACIDA, Fla. -
Senior Kris Wildenradt shot the low individual score of 69 in singles match play and junior Matt Miller won both of his matches, but in the match play format the Illinois State men's golf team fell short to Illinois 5-4 at the 2006 Tinervin Cup Saturday at the Coral Creek Club in Placida, Fla..
For the third consecutive year Illinois State and Illinois have begun their spring seasons in Florida. The tournament has been named in honor of Jeff Tinervin, a supporter of both the Redbird and Illini golf programs.
The tournament started with singles match play, with Wildenradt and Miller being the only two Redbirds to win matches as the Illini won 4-2. The afternoon featured a two player best-ball format with the `Birds winning two of the three matches.
Head coach Ray Kralis was pleased with the effort from Miller and Wildenradt and feels the `Birds can take the positives with them to next week's tournament.
"Kris and Matt had a strong showing for us today," said Kralis. "They both played extremely well in both of their matches. There are also a lot of positives we can take from this tournament. Illinois is a strong team and we knew they were going to be tough. At one point in the afternoon we were leading all three doubles matches, and it made for an exciting weekend."
Illinois State travels to San Antonio, Texas, to compete in the Roadrunner Intercollegiate hosted by Texas-San Antonio starting at 8 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday, February 20th-21st at the Oak Hills Country Club.
