SAN ANTONIO, Texas -
Junior Matt Miller continued his steady play as he fired a final-round one-over-par 72 to finish in second-place with a three-round total of three-under-par 210 (68, 70, 72) at the 10th annual Roadrunner Intercollegiate Tuesday at the Oak Hills Country Club in San Antonio, Texas. The Redbirds finished the tournament in fifth-place with a three-round total of 882 (297, 291, 294).
Assistant coach Pina Gentile felt that Miller had an outstanding tournament and that the team is in a great position going into the spring season.
"Matt had a great tournament," said Gentile. "It was a good event for him and he was able to hold on to second. I think that everyone knows what they need to work on heading into the spring season and I think we are in a better spot than we ever have been to head into the rest of the schedule."
Senior Matt Maskel shot a final-round 74 to finish tied for 16th with a three-round total of 220 (77, 69, 74). Seniors Kris Wildenradt and Chris Eddy both finished the tournament tied for 41st after shooting final-rounds of 74 to finish with a three-round total of 226 (76, 76, 74). Freshman Ben Murphy rounded out the lineup for the `Birds, shooting a three-round total of 240 (84, 79, 77) and tied for 82nd.
Playing as an individual, senior Jason Kemp finished the day in 87th with a three-round total of (86, 87, 78).
Baylor won the tournament, finishing thirteen shots ahead of Louisiana-Monroe. The Bears shot a three-round total of 855 (290, 283, 282) and their final-round 282 was the lowest round of the tournament. Leading the way for the Bears was Ryan Baca, who won medalist honors by shooting a final-round three-under-par 68 to finish with a three-round total of 199 (64, 67, 68).
Gentile believes that the `Birds were be able to benefit from playing outside and expects the team to improve in future rounds.
"It was a great opportunity for the team to be outside," said Gentile. "I think that everyone was able to get some time in and to work on things that will help the team down the road."
The Redbirds travel to Naples, Fla., to compete in the Lexus Naples Intercollegiate hosted by PGA Tour professional Peter Jacobsen on February 27th-28th at the Hammock Bay Golf and Country Club.
