Box Score
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -
It was déjà vu all over again for the Illinois State baseball team on Sunday, as the Austin Peay Governors scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win its second come-from-behind victory against the Redbirds. ISU (0-4) was defeated 7-6 on Thursday by APSU (3-2) when the Governors scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to defeat the Redbirds.
Junior Kitt Kopach (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Redbirds, after pitching just two thirds of an inning and giving up the go-ahead run in relief of Luke Baughman. Jamie Ganz (2-1) earned the victory for the Governors while Michael Parson recorded his first save of the season.
The first run of the day was scored by the visitors, as the Redbirds got on the scoreboard with a run on three hits in the top of the fourth inning. Ryan Anetsberger continued his hot hitting of late, leading off the inning with a single to left field. Anetsberger then stole second as Matt Bolt struck out on an attempted hit-and-run play. Gabe DeMarco's single then moved Anetsberger to third and Kyle O'Brien brought in Anetsberger in with a single to right field for his second RBI of the season and giving ISU a 1-0 lead.
However, Austin Peay would get that run back in the bottom of the inning. With runners on second and third with two outs, Jake Lane scored for the Governors on a wild pitch by ISU starter Jim Sajewich and the score was tied 1-1 after four innings. APSU added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Kane that scored Brandon Munsey, giving the Governors a 2-1 lead.
The up-and-down pace continued as the Redbirds pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the sixth inning. After leading off the inning with a single once again, Anetsberger eventually scored from third on a DeMarco single past the second baseman and tied the score 2-2. ISU added its third run on O'Brien's second RBI of the day, a sacrifice fly to center field, that scored Kevin Dubler to give the `Birds the lead 3-2.
Anetsberger struck again in the top of seventh inning, as he ripped a double to left-center field off of APSU reliever Ben Wilshire that scored Kris Jenkins from second and Jay Molina from first base to extend the Redbird lead to 5-2. But, Austin Peay would not go away, scoring four runs on three hits in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the lead and win the game 6-5.
Anetsberger led the way for the Redbirds, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Lane paced the Governors with three hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
ISU will be at home for just two days before traveling to Columbia, Mo., on Wednesday to face the Missouri Tigers for a mid-week contest. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Simmons Field.
