NORMAL, Ill. -
Dr. Debbie Lindberg, a member of the Illinois State University faculty since 1997, has been named as Redbird Athletics' Faculty Representative to the NCAA.
Lindberg, an Associate Professor in the Department of Accounting, replaces Dr. Jeff Wood, who resigned from the position to become the interim dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology at Illinois State.
"I'm honored that President Bowman has selected me to represent the faculty in matters related to athletics," Lindberg said. "I believe my prior training as an auditor, and my attention to detail, will help ensure that the high levels of compliance that ISU strives for will be maintained and enhanced.
"Further, my interest in the welfare of students - in the classroom and in athletics - coupled with the knowledge that athletic competition is often the `window through which our alumni see ISU,' means that my new service responsibility to the university is important to numerous constituencies, and I will do my best to earn and preserve their confidence in me."
Lindberg earned a doctorate from Boston University, an M.B.A. from Florida Atlantic University, and a B.A. from the University of Northern Iowa. Her teaching interests include auditing and financial accounting. She is a CPA and a member of numerous professional and academic organizations, including Beta Gamma Sigma, the American Accounting Association, the Illinois Society of CPAs, and the Institute of Internal Auditors.
Lindberg previously served on the Athletic Council at Illinois State from 1998-2004, and served as the council's chair from 2000-2004. She also served as the chair of the Fiscal Committee of the Athletic Council for the 1999-2000 academic year.
"During my years on the Athletic Council, I worked with several of the administrators in athletics," Lindberg said. "They are hard-working, dedicated representatives of both the athletics department and the university."
Lindberg has received numerous honors and awards during her time at Illinois State, including the University Research Initiative Award in 2001, the University Service Initiative Award in 2002, the Department of Accounting Outstanding Performance Award for Teaching in 2004 and 2001, the Department of Accounting Outstanding Performance Award for Service in 2003 and 2000, the Department of Accounting Outstanding Performance Award for Scholarly Productivity in both 2002 and 1999, and the Arthur H. Winakor Award for the outstanding accounting faculty member of the year for both the 1998-99 and 2001-02 academic years.
"We hate to lose Jeff, and he has been a tremendous resource for me in my first year," said ISU Director of Athletics Dr. Sheahon Zenger. "With that being said, I understand his desire to advance professionally and we do not want to stand in the way of his career goals. We wish him the best of luck and thank him for his years of service to Redbird Athletics.
"I have had the opportunity to become acquainted with Debbie during the past year and know that she is respected on the Illinois State campus for her professionalism, attention to detail and support of our student body. Because of these attributes, I am really looking forward to working with someone of her merit."
