Camp Report #2: The L-Train Heats Up Camp

Aug. 4, 2006

NORMAL, Ill. - The 7-on-7 drill had just started Friday night when the L-Train raced through Hancock Stadium. The duo of Luke Drone and Laurént Robinson teamed up for 1,465 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2005, and they brought that same kind of dominance to this particular session during the second practice of fall camp. Drone connected with Robinson on the first four passes and moving the ISU offense down the field.

"(In that drill) the defense dictates where the ball the goes, that's not a pre-determined thing," said head coach Denver Johnson. "The quarterback reads the defense on any given play and that dictates where the ball goes. But without question, Luke can read defenses well and Laurént obviously knows what he's doing out there. They've got something special and hopefully they will continue through the season."

The Redbirds shook off all the media attention from earlier in the day and returned to the field at 7:30 p.m., for a 24-period workout in helmets and shorts.

"Instead of coming out in the afternoon (right after media day), we wanted to let that die down and subside before we came back out," said Johnson. "I thought they came out focused and were really pretty good until the very end. They weren't as sharp as I would like to see them, but it's almost 10 o'clock at night at the end of a very long day."

Drone ended up completing 12 of his 15 pass attempts during the 7-on-7, while Robinson was the leading receiver with seven catches. Sophomore quarterback Kevin Brockway was 10-for-14 passing, but threw an interception to Mitchell Matthews. Jared Dall completed 4-of-5 tosses, while Preston Earl was a perfect 3-for-3.

The team will receive its third straight 6 a.m. wake-up call, before returning to the field at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday for the third practice of camp.
