EAST LANSING, Mich. -
After an impressive performance on Saturday at the Spartan Invitational, the Illinois State women's tennis team continued its winning streak on Sunday by defeating Detroit Mercy, and splitting wins with Eastern Michigan and Indiana State.
In doubles round two, the `Birds dominated Detroit Mercy, winning all three matches outright. The team of Katri Miller and Véronique Parke-Bérdard won their match 8-4, while newcomers, Julia Zubkova and Jeanelle Stines won 8-3 and Carolyne Parent and Matea Simovic defeated their opponents 8-2.
Heading into the doubles round three after the victories in round two, it was the Redbird senior pair of Miller and Simovic that had confidence.
After a very close match, it was the senior `Bird leaders that showed they were the better pair that day. Miller and Simovic finished the match, defeating Kelly Hamm and Fadzai Masiyazi of Indiana State with a final score of 9-7.
In singles round 3 play, the `Birds split wins with Eastern Michigan, as three `Birds took home victories. Zubkova defeated her opponent Elizebeth Syrova (6-1,6-1) Stines won against Yana Parfenyuk (6-3, 6-2) and Parent defeated Catherina Bestehorn 7-5,7-5.
Head coach Chris Hoover was pleased with the results of the tournament and looks forward to playing the MVC Individuals.
Hoover and the `Birds will take the upcoming weekend off to rest and gear up for the Missouri Valley Conference Individuals, which will take place September 29th through October 1st.
