Stines and Zubkova Look to Take Home Crowns and MVC Individuals

OMAHA, Neb. - The Illinois State women's tennis team finished its second day of the Missouri Valley Conference Individuals and will advance both freshmen, Jeanelle Stines and Julia Zubkova to the finals tomorrow.

Stines defeated her opponent Jackie Richey of Witchita 6-2, 6-0 while Zubkova came out on top with a final score of 6-2, 7-6 (4) against Joanne Schickerling of Indiana State.

After some close losses the first day of the tournament, the `Birds sent pairs Veronique Parke-Bedard and Jeanelle Stines along with Carolyne Parent and Matea Simovic to the semi-finals today. Both pairs unfortunately came up short of the wins. Bedard and Stines lost to Witchita State 8-2 while Southern beat Parent and Simovic 8-5.

In backdraw semifinal singles play, Katri Miller, Parke-Bedard and Parent all beat their opponents. Also in backdraw semifinal doubles play, the pair of Miller and Zubkova beat Creighton's Katie Chiu and Tess Reddin with a score of 8-4.

Head coach Chris Hoover is very impressed with his freshmen and hopes they can take home the crowns tomorrow.

"The freshmen are really playing well," said Hoover. "They are the future of this team, so it is great to see them performing so well against the conference."

Matches will continue tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. and conclude around 2 p.m. with results to follow
