After leading the Illinois State men's basketball team to its first win in conference play last Tuesday and pouring in a career-high 24 points on Saturday, junior point guard Boo Richardson was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week by the league office. It is Richardson's third such honor this season, and the fourth plaudit for Illinois State.
The Redbirds began the week defeating Northern Iowa, 67-64, in overtime at Redbird Arena. The Redbirds were able to hand UNI its first loss in Valley play, as Richardson scored four points and dished out four assists while playing a team-high 38 minutes.
Richardson entered Saturday's game at Drake with 12 points combined in Valley action, but the transfer from Coffeyville Community College poured in a career-high 24 points, on eight-for-13 shooting, in the `Birds 70-66 loss at the Knapp Center in Des Moines, Iowa. ISU overcame a 13-point, first-half deficit, but a pair of late turnovers proved costly in the defeat.
Richardson, a native of Kansas City, Kan., averaged 14 points per game last week, while dishing out seven assists.
