As the Illinois State women's tennis team gets ready to kick off its spring season, it does so with one goal already accomplished. The `Birds finished the fall semester with an new record-setting 3.40 team grade-point average (GPA), which is the highest among all the 19 sports at ISU.
This accomplishment was owed to the effort of the entire team, as six of the seven women were named to the AFNI Honor roll, which honors student-athletes who earn a 3.0 GPA or higher.
Junior international business major Véronique Parke-Bédard led the team by earning a 4.0. Senior Matea Simovic and Junior Carolyne Parent also boosted the average with 3.8 GPAs.
Head coach Chris Hoover is very happy with his team's hard work and determination in the classroom.
"Winning this award is always one of our goals," said Hoover. "Most of the time, our kids come in and are academically solid. I think they expect it of themselves."
This is the first time in women's tennis history that the team has earned a regular-season title in the spring and the highest GPA in the fall. It is also the 9th time the women's tennis has earned this award since 1994.
