The Illinois State women's tennis team secured their spot in four of the five finals position at the Mizzou Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 13. Senior Katri Miller and sophomore Julia Zubkova have successfully fought their way through the competition for the chance to compete for the Flight A Singles title tomorrow morning.
Miller topped senior Véronique Parke-Bédard in the semifinals of the Flight A Singles, 6-4, 1-6, 11-9. Zubkova faced Veronica Leszayova (DU) and won, 7-5, 6-4, granting her a position to play against her fellow teammate Miller in the finals tomorrow. Parke-Bedard will face Leszayova for a spot at third.
In Flight B Singles, senior Carolyne Parent led the way, beating Sarah Septien (SLU), 6-2, 6-3. Becker defeated freshman Katie O'Riley, 6-4, 6-3, and is set to play Parent, in tomorrow's consolation finals. O'Riley will also play Septien in the consolation bracket.
Miller and Parke-Bedard opened the day's Flight A Doubles action with a win against Raquel Wagner and Maureen Modesto (MU), 8-3. The duo continued thier success all the way to the semifinals, topping Chrissy Derouin and Erin Karonis (ISU), 8-2. They are set to play Mallory Weber and Chrissy Svetlic (MU) in the finals tomorrow. Sophomore Carmen Peters and Sofia Ayala (MU), teamed up again for the day. They faced Kari Sloboth and Sarah Plowman (DU) and were defeated 8-5.
Consistency has been the main concern for head coach Chris Hoover, and today was the perfect example of what he wants every match.
"We did really well today, even when we didn't win we came back and had wins in the back draw," said Hoover. "We did exactly what we needed to do today and I hope we can keep this consistency through tomorrow."
Action concludes in the Mizzou Invitational on Sunday.
