COLUMBIA, Mo. -
The Redbirds concluded the Mizzou Invitational with some key wins over their competition on Sunday, Oct. 14. Senior Katri Miller won the first match of the day, taking home the title in Flight A Singles.
Miller faced fellow opponent, sophomore Julia Zubkova, and topped her with a score of 6-3, 6-3 in the Flight A Singles finals.
"Julia has really started to show her potential," said head coach Chris Hoover. "I think her having the chance to compete against Katri, was a good experience for her."
In Flight B Singles action, senior Carolyne Parent also took home a win, defeating Joe Becker (SLU) in three sets, 5-7, 6-2, 10-6.
Junior Tanja Hrovatic, played Sofia Ayala (MU) in the Flight C Singles final, but came up short of a win after two sets, 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Carmen Peters competed in the consolation round of the same flight and won against Ashley Pierson (MSU) in straight sets, 7-6, 6-0.
In Flight A Doubles, Miller and senior Véronique Parke-Bédard were bested by Chrissy Svetlic and Mallory Weber (MU), 8-4. However, Zubkova and freshman Katie O'Riley brought home a win in the consolation finals, beating Sarah Septien and Casey Miller (SLU), 8-5.
Parent and Hrovatic had the last win of the day in the Flight B Doubles. They topped duo Dori Losonczy and Liza Wischer (ISU), 8-4, in the consolation finals.
"I am happy with this tournament," said Hoover. "I definitely see improvement in my players from when they began in September and this was a great way for them to end before the winter months."
Miller and Parke-Bedard will compete in the ITA Midwest Regionals in Ann Arbor, Mich. starting on Oct. 18.
