Tulsa, Okla. - Competing in singles consolation bracket, Junior Daniel Tobar took a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Alex Dargel of Oral Roberts Friday, as the Illinois State men's tennis team finished its fall schedule at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships in Tulsa, Okla. The `Birds were 1-1 on the day, splitting a pair of singles consolation matches.

Tobar was joined in the singles consolation bracket by teammate Michael Hobson. Tobar's victory marked the fifth on the season for the Santiago, Chile, native. Competing against Juan Carlos Nunez of Arkansas-Little Rock, Hobson fell, 6-2, 6-0, to end his fall season with a 6-4 singles record.

After Tobar's consolation victory, the `Birds elected not to compete in the final two days of the competition.

Illinois State men's tennis coach Cris James was pleased with his team's progress in his first fall season as head coach of the Redbirds.

"Coming out of the fall season, the one thing that I am most happy with is that everybody is playing substantially better now than at the beginning of the season," said James. "I asked the guys at the beginning of the year to make sure they were always improving, and they have all done that.

"For the most part, this fall, we had successful results," said James. "We are trying to set the bar high, so we are not completely satisfied by any means."

Play continues at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championships Saturday, before concluding Sunday.
